My 6-week Remote Marketing Internship with Vyrill

Updated: Feb 24, 2022

My name is Tolu and I had a one month internship with Vyrill as a Marketing intern. I love crocheting and reading novels. I study Media Production at Bournemouth University.I chose BU because it’s one of the best universities for any media course in UK and because of its location.

I wanted an overseas internship to experience the work environment in another country. I started this experience to gain more opportunities, for personal growth, to learn and improve skills, to connect with people and to enhance my career prospects. I accepted the position at Vyrill because I was interested in the new technology they have, the role was relevant to my industry and I clicked with my supervisor during the interview. She had been a video producer and I thought it would’ve been a great opportunity to learn from her.

Above is a screenshot of my last meeting with the Marketing Team.

Adapting to the virtual workspace

When I started, I felt a bit tired because I was always working at night due to the time difference, I was very excited to be working in my field and meet new people and I was eager to learn.

There wasn’t much difference between my life in Bournemouth and my virtual workspace as I’m already used to a virtual workspace due to online learning in the past year. Like I mentioned earlier, I always worked at night from around five in the evening to about ten but it varied depending on how much work I had to do and how many meetings we had that day.

My team was thoughtful enough not to schedule meeting that I had to attend beyond ten or sometimes nine in the night. I found it very easy to talk with my team members and the CEO whenever I needed to pass information or I had a question. We communicated mostly through Slack, a business communication platform.

What I learnt

This experience was to teach me how the media industry worked and it did just that. I loved creating content every week for their different social media platforms and this improved my editing skills.

The reality of my role didn’t really differ from the expectations I had before starting. The most important things I learnt from this experience were editing, project management, time management and leadership.

It was an amazing experience where I got to learn what I wouldn’t necessarily have at uni and it looked good on my CV.

This experience was an eye opener to the industry. I started content creation for the first time and now I can say I’m good at it.

Here are some images I designed for their blog posts:

I now have experience in my industry to get started with. With this experience, I have gained a lot of transferable skills that would increase my employability. It was a fun learning experience that has improved my personal and professional skills and I’ve been able to network with people.
